Unable to cancel pocket wifi contract

Hi, I hope someone is able to help me with this.

I recently got contacted on the phone by Vodafone last Tuesday (13/8/13) and they were telling me that since I've been with them for 2 years, they would like to offer me a pocket wifi since I've been a loyal customer. I agreed, thinking that I would need it but I realised that I wouldn't even need it since I don't use wifi everywhere I go and that I can't afford it.

I received the pocket wifi 2 days later and the box has been opened but I have not used the pocket wifi nor have I activated the SIM card. I called Vodafone today wanting to cancel the contract as I would not need the product. I was put on hold numerous times and was constantly transferred to different people saying that I have to pay a cancellation fee of $460! I thought that was pretty crazy since I haven't even used it. I am not paying $460 if I haven't even signed a written contract and wasn't made aware of the cooling off period.

I just want to cancel this contract as it was initiated by Vodafone and they are very persuasive sales people.
